At What Age Should Children Start Learning Spanish?

The short version: sooner is easier, and no reasonable age is too late. Young children reproduce unfamiliar sounds with less effort, so an early start often produces a more natural accent. But the more useful question is which format matches your child right now.

Ages 1–3: alongside a parent

At this stage children learn through song, movement, and repetition with a trusted adult nearby. Parent & Child runs 45 minutes on Saturday mornings with you in the room, and it doubles as gentle practice for school routines and socialising.

Ages 2–5: a full immersion morning

This is where immersion does the most work, because the whole environment is Spanish for three hours. Spanish Immersion Preschool meets Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and families choose 1 to 5 days a week. No Spanish is required to start.

Ages 3½–12: after school and Saturdays

Once a child is in school, Spanish School adds immersion around their existing week — a 2-hour format from one to five days a week, or a 1-hour format for ages 3½–8 one day a week. Children are placed by level, so a nine-year-old beginner isn't sitting in a class built for fluent speakers.

Ages 3–12, wherever you are

Our Virtual Program offers one-hour private tutoring Monday through Friday and interactive group classes on Saturdays. It also works as extra practice on top of an in-person program.

School breaks are a shortcut

Camps compress a lot of Spanish hours into a short stretch, which is why they build confidence quickly. Summer Camp covers the long break, and Specialty Camps cover Holiday, Winter, and Spring weeks.

Age ranges overlap on purpose, and temperament matters as much as the number. The fastest way to settle it is to watch a class with us and talk it through.
