Does My Child Need to Speak Spanish Before Starting Immersion?
No. Most of our students start with no Spanish at all — and the classroom is built for exactly that.
Short answer: no. Your child does not need to speak or understand any Spanish before starting. Most children who walk into a SiW classroom for the first time have never had a Spanish conversation in their life, and that is the situation the method is designed for.
Why a beginner isn't at a disadvantage
Immersion doesn't assume prior knowledge — it assumes context. Teachers carry meaning with gesture, objects, pictures, tone, and a routine that repeats every session, so a child who understands nothing on day one still knows what is about to happen by the second week.
What the first few weeks usually look like
- Week one: your child watches, follows the group, and understands the shape of the session rather than the words.
- Weeks two and three: routine phrases start landing — greetings, clean-up, snack, transitions.
- After that: single words appear at home, often out of nowhere and usually while playing.
Talking generally comes later than understanding. A quiet child is often the one absorbing the most.
What helps at home
Nothing complicated, and you do not need to speak Spanish yourself. Keep the tone light, don't quiz, and don't correct pronunciation — that's our job. Playing the songs from class in the car does more than any worksheet.
Choosing a first step
For ages 1–3, Parent & Child lets you sit in the room with your child on a Saturday morning. For ages 2–5, our Spanish Immersion Preschool takes children with no Spanish at all and enrolls 1 to 5 mornings a week, with rolling enrollment so you don't have to wait for September. School-age beginners are placed by level in Spanish School.

- What if my child gets frustrated and doesn't want to speak?
- That's expected early on and we never push a child to perform. Understanding comes first, and speaking follows once a child feels safe.
- Do you accept children mid-year?
- Yes — preschool enrollment is open and rolling, and Spanish School students are placed by level rather than by start date.
