What Makes Full-Spanish Immersion Different from a Traditional Spanish Class?
One teaches about Spanish. The other uses Spanish to do everything else. The difference shows up in how children respond.
Parents comparing options on Long Island usually see two very different things described with the same words. Both are called "Spanish for kids." Only one of them is immersion.
A traditional class teaches the language as a subject
Instruction happens mostly in English. Spanish appears as vocabulary lists, colours, numbers, and songs, and children are told what things mean. It's tidy, easy for parents to follow, and produces recognisable results: children who know words.
Immersion makes the language the environment
In immersion, Spanish is how the room runs — greetings, instructions, snack, clean-up, art, movement. Nothing is translated during instruction, so children work out meaning from context and routine. The result is different in kind: children who use phrases, not children who recite them.
What that looks like in practice
- The teacher speaks Spanish for the whole session, supported by gestures, objects, and pictures.
- Vocabulary arrives attached to an activity instead of a list.
- Understanding comes first; speaking follows when the child is ready.
- Progress often looks like comprehension long before it looks like conversation.
Which format suits which child
A weekly hour is a reasonable introduction for a family testing interest. If you want Spanish to become a foundation your child keeps building on, hours in the language matter, and immersion is where those hours come from. That's the reason our preschool runs a full morning rather than a class period, and our Spanish School meets from one to five days a week.
